PROFILE
Dr Kurt Brereton was born in Australia in 1955. A mid career visual and digital media artist, writer and creative arts & design academic, Kurt is based in Sydney, Australia.
Brereton's first solo exhibition was at Bondi Pavillion Gallery Sydney in 1980 and since then he has mounted over 30 solo exhibitions in Australia and overseas (USA, England, Ireland, Taiwan).
Kurt resigned from full time academia in 2001 to concentrate on his art and writing career. He continues to teach art part time at various tertiary and community institutions and is currently Adjunct Professor at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Queensland.
In 2005 his book Hyper-Taiwan: Art, Design, Culture was published by Art & Collection (Taiwan). In 2008 Luscious, a monograph on Brereton's recent art career was published by Lakeland Arts (USA) in conjunction with a solo exhibition of his paintings and videos in New York.
In July-August 2009 a major survey exhibition of over 70 works spanning 1999 - 2009 began its journey at the Wollongong City Art Gallery. He won the James Kiwi Watercolour Prize in 2010. We Are A Movie (Collected Artist Books 1979-82) by Brereton, was published by Jellied Tongue Press was published in April 2011.
The Coalcliff Days exhibition (curated with Ken Bolton and Sal Brereton) was mounted in conjuctioin with the publication of the poetry and art anthology Coalcliff Days – 1979-82, in May 2011 at the Wollongong City Gallery.
More Is Plenty, a 400pp monograph on Kurt Brereton's art career, edited by Ken Bolton, was published by JTP in October 2011.
RHIZOMES
Exhibition catalog of paintings and digital video animations held at Gallery Paquette, Boonton, NJ, USA. 2012. Explores the concept of rhizomatic art production using the subject of mangroves and Pandanus Palms as metaphors. Both organisms are themselves rhizomes and serve as models for extended modes of production.
RHIZO-PHOTOGRAPHY
Exhibition catalog of photo installation and digital video animations held at Compton Gallery, Boonton, NJ, USA in 2012. Each image serves as a node that leads to other images around it in time and place. The captions to each photo become more narrative in scope as the reader moves through the book.
